Studies have consistently shown that the top two fears of people globally are the fear of speaking, also known as “glossophobia” and the fear of death, also called “necrophobia.”
The interesting fact is not that these are the top fears. The interesting fact is that the fear of public speaking consistently leads the fear of death.
What is more amazing is that three out of four people have a fear of public speaking, even though studies show that failing to conquer one’s fear of public speaking has a direct correlation to the success in one’s career, profession or chosen passion. This is evident when one observes “successful” individuals who speak about their companies and interest with a passion that comes from their heart. It does not matter which sector of society the individual is from. Whether it is speaking on television, before a room of shareholders or a convention filled with thousands of people, the ability to speak publicly is critical. Many remember few elected officials who shy away from public speaking. The ability to lead effectively and embracing public speaking goes hand in hand.
Public speaking can be perfect by anyone. The following public speaking tips will help guide one towards enhancing their public speaking skills.
Public Speaking Tip 1: Master the Subject Matter. This is different than researching and knowing a particular subject matter. Effective public speakers not only know the information that they are speaking about, they also make the information personal to them so when they speak on the subject matter they can speak with an intimacy on the subject which gives the information a warmth during the course of the delivery which is more easily received by the audience.
Public Speaking Tip 2: Speak within yourself. Everyone has a different speaking style. Many of the great orators in history range in the manner of their speaking style based on their upbringing, their culture and the geographic area where they grew up. They key to their success is that each stayed within their own personal speaking style. This requires a person to be very comfortable with themselves. An audience can tell if someone is not being authentic or is trying to imitate someone else. To be successful, own your speaking style, flaws and all.
Public Speaking Tip 3: Practice. Great speakers were not always great speakers. All have stories about when they bombed as a speaker or did not execute their delivery the way they expected. Relax. They got over it and so can you. Practice every chance you can get, including volunteering.
